LISBON – Eintracht Frankfurt scored twice in 10 minutes in the second half to upset hosts Sporting 2-1 on Tuesday and advance to the Champions League last 16 for the first time, knocking the Portuguese out of the competition.

The Europa League champions came back from the brink of elimination at halftime, and goals from Daichi Kamada and Randal Kolo Muani after the break saw them leave the pitch as improbable winners.

Eintracht finished second in Group D with 10 points from six games, while Tottenham Hotspur took the lead with 11 points following a last-gasp 2-1 victory against bottom club Olympique de Marseille. Sporting finished third and will remain in the Europa League.

Sporting needed only a point to move to the knockout rounds, but they would have gone down in the 13th minute if Sporting keeper Antonio Adan hadn't made a diving save to prevent teammate Paulinho from heading an own goal.

The hosts had Nuno Santos pulled out with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury early in the game, but they still took the lead in the 39th minute when winger Arthur Gomes volleyed home at the far post after a looping ball was headed on.

Eintracht barely had a look in the first half and were plainly lacking in ideas, with Sporting doing an excellent job of rapidly closing down openings.

However, Sporting lost their stride after the interval, and the visitors came out battling, anxious for a win to finish in the top two.

Sporting captain Sebastian Coates' handball in the 62nd minute earned Frankfurt a penalty, which Kamada converted with a well-taken spot kick.

In the 72nd minute, France international Kolo Muani raced into the area and hammered home the winner to complete their comeback and claim a place in the knockout rounds.
