Little Lies, Everywhere, Don't Stop, Say You Love Me, and Songbird were all hits for the British singer-songwriter.

According to a statement, she died quietly in the presence of her family at a hospital.

McVie departed Fleetwood Mac in 1998 after 28 years, but rejoined in 2014.

"We would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of a great human being, and respected musician who was adored internationally," the family said in a statement.

McVie, who was born Christine Perfect, married Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie and joined the band in 1971.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Fleetwood Mac was one of the world's most well-known rock bands.

Rumours, inspired by the divorces of the McVies and the band's other coupling, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, became one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide.

McVie was one of the band's eight members inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

She retired to Kent the next year, following the success of their live CD The Dance, citing a dread of travelling as the reason for her departure from the band.

She rediscovers her passion of performing after a one-off appearance with the band at London's O2 in 2013, and she rejoins them a year later.

"It felt as though I'd never left." "I stepped up on there, and there they were, the same old faces on stage," she explained to the Guardian at the time.

She said in 2017 on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs that she had acquired agoraphobia since leaving the band.

The band remarked of McVie, "We were extremely happy to share a life with her."

"Both individually and collectively, we treasured Christine and are grateful for the wonderful memories we have." She will be greatly missed."

Stevie Nicks posted on Instagram, "A few hours ago I was notified that my closest friend in the entire world from the first day of 1975, had died away."

"I had no idea she was sick... until late Saturday night." I wanted to be in London and go there, but we were instructed to wait.

"So, since Saturday, one song has been playing over and over in my brain. I thought I may be able to sing it to her, therefore I'm doing so right now.

"I'd known I'd need these words one day... It's all I can do right now."
