The Witcher star Henry Cavill has announced his departure from the Netflix series, with actor Liam Hemsworth slated to take his place as Geralt of Rivia.
Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, has announced his departure from the Netflix series. Instead, actor Liam Hemsworth will portray the titular monster slayer.
Cavill said on social media, "My trip as Geralt of Rivia has been full of monsters and adventures, but I will be putting down my medallion and swords for Season 4. In my place, the magnificent Mr Liam Hemsworth will assume the role of the White Wolf. As with the greatest literary characters, I pass the torch with gratitude for the time spent as Geralt and excitement to witness Liam's interpretation of this most intriguing and nuanced of men."
Hemsworth commented after the news, "As a Witcher fan, I'm overjoyed at the prospect of playing Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been a great Geralt, and I'm honored that he's handed me the reigns and asked me to pick up the White Wolf's swords for the next chapter of his odyssey... I may have large shoes to fill, but I'm quite happy to be entering The Witcher world."
As Cavill stated in the statement, the adjustment will occur in Season 4, which Netflix has officially revealed. According to reports, production on the fourth and fifth seasons, which will be shot concurrently, has already begun. According to previous rumours, filming would begin in late 2023, following the release of The Witcher Season 3.
Cavill is a huge Witcher fan, and he brought that zeal to the Netflix drama. Earlier in the season, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich said how the Man of Steel star approached her about portraying Geralt before the show had even begun casting. Despite the fact that several actors auditioned for the job, Hissrich eventually returned to Cavill and awarded it to him.
The actor has previously stated that he played CD Projekt Red video games and Andrzej Sapkowski novels before bringing his understanding of Witcher history to the Netflix program. That was incorporated into the series by Hissrich, who explained how he would provide remarks regarding Geralt of Rivia's portrayal. The showrunner noted how the character was given additional conversation as an example of how these notes added to the show.
Season 3 of The Witcher will be published in the summer of 2023.
