Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said that five people were killed in a shooting in the city on Thursday. One of the victims was a retired Raleigh Police officer.

Two persons were brought to the hospital, including a Raleigh K9 officer who suffered non-life threatening injuries.

"This is a terrible and awful day for Raleigh," remarked the mayor.

At least four individuals were hurt in a "active shooting" in a Raleigh, North Carolina, neighborhood, according to authorities.

"The Raleigh Police Department is now on the scene of an active shooting at Osprey Cove Drive and Bay Harbor Drive on the Neuse River Greenway." Residents in that region are encouraged to stay indoors," Raleigh Police tweeted.

As of 8:40 p.m., no suspects were in custody. Police tweeted on Thursday.

Earlier aerial footage from CNN affiliate WRAL-TV showed a queue of more than a dozen emergency vehicles on a route through the woods.

Four patients from an active gunshot incident are being treated at a trauma facility, according to a nearby hospital. Deb Laughery, a representative for the WakeMed Health and Hospitals system, told CNN that she did not know the victims' injuries or status right away.

The gunman or shooters have not been identified by police.

The investigation is being conducted by a number of law enforcement organizations, according to a tweet from Raleigh Police. The Charlotte Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) stated that agents were on the scene.

In the tweet, police also warned residents in the Hedingham neighborhood to stay indoors. Police later tweeted that people in the areas of "McConnell Oliver Drive, Tarheel Club Drive, and Old Milburnie Road" should stay indoors. Drivers should avoid the area and seek other routes."

Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina tweeted that he spoke with Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and "instructed state law enforcement to give help responding to the active shooter in East Raleigh."

"State and local officers are on the ground trying to apprehend the gunman and keep people safe," added the governor.

An "unending stream of police" drove by the Hedingham Golf Club driving range, according to a woman who was there.

"I have never seen so many cops in one location, so that was what really made us nervous," the lady told CNN, adding that while she did not hear any gunshots, the sirens of the police and EMS were continuous and made it "impossible to hear."

According to the lady, cops were racing along Southall Road and Wild Dunes Drive, both of which are near the driving range.

"A golf pro came out and told us to stay inside or leave right away," she explained. "They were quiet, but I could tell there was something wrong, so we left immediately away."
