Skygazers and stargazers around Hampton Roads may get fleeting glimpses of the Orionid meteor shower, one of the year's most magnificent meteor showers, when it peaks Thursday and Friday.

After midnight today, the sky might see up to 15 meteors per hour.

According to NASA, Orionid meteors are notable for their speed, leaving dazzling trains of incandescent debris in their wake that may persist for many seconds to minutes. Fast meteors can sometimes become fireballs that rocket across the night sky.

NASA recommends that skywatchers locate a location distant from city or street lights. After around 30 minutes of darkness, your eyes will adjust and you will start to see meteors. When watching the Orionid meteor shower, look for extended bursts of light.

"Be patient - the display will run till daybreak, so you'll have plenty of time to see it," the agency wrote on its website.

Every year, the meteors appear as Earth passes through a region of space filled with debris from Halley's Comet, peaking around mid-October. If you miss the meteor shower tonight or Friday, NASA says it will be visible until Nov. 22.
