Twitch Bans Streaming of Unlicensed Gambling Sites, but Will Continue to Allow Poker and Sports Betting
Twitch announced that beginning next month, it would prohibit the broadcasting of some gambling websites that are not regulated in the United States or "other jurisdictions that provide adequate consumer protection."
The Amazon-owned livestreaming network, which is most popular among game producers, made the step in response to claims that a streamer named ItsSliker had duped other Twitch artists out of hundreds of thousands of dollars to finance a "gambling addiction," as reported by the Verge.
Twitch stated Tuesday that from Oct. 18, it would prohibit livestreaming sites that provide dice games, slots, and roulette. It named four sites that will be blocked — Stake.com, Rollbit.com, Duelbits.com, and Roobet.com — and stated that "more may be identified as we move forward."
Twitch, on the other hand, has stated that it will continue to allow broadcasting of sites that "concentrate on" poker, fantasy sports, and sports betting.
"Gambling material on Twitch has been a hot subject in the community, and one we've been actively examining since our previous policy change in this area," stated the streaming site. "While we restrict exchanging links or referral codes to all sites that involve slots, roulette, or dice games, we've seen some users evade those regulations, potentially endangering our community."
In reaction to Twitch's gambling policy modification, Pokimane, a prominent creator on the platform who had asked the site to act on the problem, wrote, "LET'S GOOOOO."
Streamers are forbidden under Twitch's current Community Guidelines from recommending viewers to sites that offer slots, roulette, or dice games, or from sharing affiliate links or referral codes to such sites.
