Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend a formal funeral in Tokyo next week for Japan's slain former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Abe, 67, was assassinated in July during a political campaign rally in Nara, Japan, after stepping down as Prime Minister in 2020.
According to Trudeau's office, Japan's longest-serving prime leader was a "close ally and friend" of Canada.
Trudeau is scheduled to leave Ottawa on Saturday, attend the funeral on Tuesday, and return on Wednesday.
During his visit, he is also slated to meet with Japan's current Prime Minister, Kishida Fumio.
According to the PMO, the two will discuss common interests as Japan prepares to take over the G7 chair next year, as well as regional security problems like as North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
