Torture and murder charges have been filed against the mother and grandmother of a 5-year-old California child who was killed.

A 5-year-old child in California was allegedly tortured to death by her mother and grandmother, who were arrested and charged with second-degree murder on Tuesday.

On Sept. 8, about 7:53 p.m., police officers arrived at the house of Vanessa C. Rangel, 37, and Hilaria Rangel, 55, in response to complaints of an unconscious kid.

Medics attempted to resuscitate the unresponsive girl before declaring her dead at the site.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department's Central Homicide Unit was notified when investigators established that the child's injuries were the result of alleged abuse.

Hilaria was found at a separate property in Coachella Tuesday evening, while her mother was detained at the site.

They were both charged with first-degree murder, assault on a child resulting in death, and four charges of knowingly endangering a child.

Vanessa is also charged with second-degree murder and torture. They were lodged at Indio's John Benoit Detention Center.
