Stabbing and shooting outside Atlanta at Georgia Mall
A person was stabbed Friday at the Mall of Georgia outside Atlanta and an officer shot the suspect, police said.
The incident began when a suspected thief started smashing jewelry counters at the Macy's store in the mall, authorities said. The suspect then stabbed at least one person and a Gwinnett County police officer shot the suspect, news outlets reported.
Police have not released details about the health of the two people. No other details were released.
Several roads in the area were closed for police investigation.
Police say they believe the incident started as a robbery attempt at Macy's, with the suspect damaging the jewelry counter with a tool such as a crowbar.
Richter said they believed the suspects "attempted to obtain merchandise." Police said they received a call around 11:30 a.m. about a suspect running away from Macy's.
Officers found the suspect nearby at the intersection of Mall of Georgia Blvd.and Financial Center Road. Roads around the mall are being restricted in some way. Exits from I-85 to Buford Drive near the mall have been closed.
