Videos of a skyscraper fire in China show the Changsha Building engulfed in flames.

A skyscraper in southern China caught fire on Friday, with social-media footage showing dozens of stories of the multistory tower block engulfed in flames, despite authorities claiming no injuries had been reported.

A big cloud of black smoke enveloped the blue skyline in downtown Changsha, the capital of Hunan province and a population of more than 10 million people, and large things and fragments of rubble were seen falling off the 42-story structure.

The 715-foot-tall China Telecom skyscraper "burned with enormous ferocity," according to state television CCTV.

As the fire overtook the tower, a video on social media appeared to show hundreds of people fleeing the state-owned corporate building.

The city's fire service claimed it dispatched an army of 280 firemen, who were able to immediately extinguish the incident.


"By about 4:30pm today, the fire at our No 2 Communications Tower in Changsha had been extinguished," China Telecom said in a statement.

"There have been no victims identified to yet, and communications have not been disrupted."

According to Hunan's fire service, early investigations revealed that the building's outside caught fire.

According to CCTV, the China Telecom building was built in 2000 and is located on a major ring road.
