A man suspected to be armed with a gun was apprehended Tuesday in Bloomington, Indiana, after police spent hours looking for him in the city's sewer system.
Bloomington police began searching for the culprit in the sewers at 12:30 p.m. EDT, according to Bloomington Police Capt. Ryan Pedigo. The suspect, who has not been identified, was sought on warrants, according to authorities. He was taken to a nearby hospital by police after being pulled from a storm drain about 5:30 p.m., according to authorities.
Authorities did not indicate if a firearm was found or how the man was hurt.
A person was spotted entering a storm drain near downtown on Tuesday afternoon, according to an advisory issued by Indiana University. According to the notice, campus police were monitoring a sewage outflow in Dunn Meadow near Franklin Hall, where occupants were sheltering in place.
In a tweet, the Bloomington Police Department stated, "We are working with Utilities to discover the subterranean sewer pipes that a human may fit in."
Multiple agencies were on the scene and aiding in the search in the city roughly 50 miles south of Indianapolis, according to the department.
According to authorities, despite the fact that the man was armed with a gun, he did not fire any rounds.
