25 September, SEOUL The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said that on Sunday, North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile into the ocean off its east coast in advance of massive military exercises with an aircraft carrier planned by South Korean and American forces.

The military of South Korea withheld more information about the missile, including its range and course.

According to the Yonhap news agency in South Korea, which cited the South's military, North Korea may be getting ready to test a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

The launch occurs after a U.S. aircraft carrier docks in South Korea to take part in joint exercises with South Korean military and before U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris's planned trip there the following week.

After launching eight short-range ballistic missiles in a single day at the beginning of June, the North carried out its first launch of this kind, prompting the United States to seek for more U.N. penalties for the country's violations of Security Council resolutions.

North Korea rejects U.N. resolutions because they interfere with its sovereign right to space development and self-defense.
