More than 2,000 people in San Luis Obispo were without electricity Tuesday afternoon.

For the third day in a row, a power outage in San Luis Obispo left almost 2,000 PG &E customers without electricity.

The outage happened at 2:19 p.m. on September 6. Sections of Los Osos Valley and Madonna Rds., as well as neighboring residential neighborhoods, are without power, affecting 2,312 PG &E customers in south San Luis Obispo, largely west of Highway 101.

The same region was struck both Sunday and Monday afternoon.

When the power went out, one caller informed KSBY she was unable to fill up at Costco.

The power should be restored by 6 p.m.

PG&E has not yet provided an explanation for the power outage.

The outage comes after a week of countrywide flex warnings, and hot temperatures are putting a strain on California's power infrastructure.

Updates

According to the PG&E outage map, power has been restored to all but 230 customers as of 4:20 p.m. Customers that are still affected are all located between Highway 101 and Laguna Lake Park.

3:40 p.m. update: The street light on Calle Joaquin and Los Osos Valley Road in San Luis Obispo was reopened as of 3:40 p.m. Tuesday. The Bear Valley Shopping Center's power was also restored.

Update, 3:15 p.m.: Due to the blackout, the Toyota store on Los Osos Valley Road had canceled all auto servicing appointments, and the street light at Los Osos Valley Road and Calle Joaquin was also out. Due to the defective signal, traffic was backed up in both directions on Los Osos Valley Road, as well as into Higuera Street in the right turn lane onto LOVR.

Engineers discovered the cause of Tuesday's outage but were unable to pinpoint its precise location. Carina Corral, a PG&E spokesman, told The Tribune via email that the three outages experienced by local homeowners over the last three days were caused by "increased powerline safety settings." According to Corral, the safety settings immediately turn off electricity within one-tenth of a second if there is a wildfire danger, such as a tree limb or other debris striking a powerline.

"We understand the inconvenience this is causing our consumers and appreciate their patience as we try to remedy this issue," Corral added. "While EPSS technology improves the safety of our power system for our consumers, it can also lead to more frequent and, in certain cases, longer-lasting outages." Original story: On a day when the temperature is forecast to hit 102 degrees, more than 2,300 customers in San Luis Obispo are without electricity. According to the PG &E outage map, power went out to 2,312 customers around 2:19 p.m. The outage is mostly affecting the Laguna Lake region of San Luis Obispo. The problem is being investigated, and electricity will not be restored until 6 p.m.

Around the same time yesterday, the same region - and the same number of customers - faced a power outage. On Sunday, there was a similar disruption.
