Chrysler will say goodbye to its once so successful 300 sedan and launch a limited performance version of the car for the last year of production.

The 2023 Chrysler 300C will be powered by a 6.4-litre V8 Hemi engine that develops 485 horsepower and 475 Newton-metres of torque, according to the company. It is expected to reach a top speed of 160 mph and go from 0 to 100 mph in about 4.3 seconds.

The automaker said it will produce only 2,000 cars for the U.S. and 200 for Canada. The starting price will be $55,000. Reservations are available at reservation.chrysler.com after the company unveiled the car Tuesday night at the Detroit Auto Show.

While crossovers and SUVs are popular among American buyers, Chrysler was lauded for reintroducing the 300, which was initially debuted in 1955, as a new model in 2005. It was termed the "mini-Bentley" because of its bold appearance and road presence, which included a huge, checkered grille.

Sales exceeded 100,000 units per year, but gradually declined to less than 17,000 units in the last two years. The last 300C model was offered for the 2020 model year. The current top-of-the-line 300 offers a 5.7-liter V8 Hemi engine with 363 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque.

Production of the 300 will cease next year after the 2023 model year, according to Stellantis, Chrysler's parent company. The car is manufactured in Ontario, Canada, along with the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger, whose production also ends next year.

Both Dodge vehicles will also come with special performance variants. The muscle cars are expected to be replaced by an all-electric high-performance vehicle that the company recently unveiled as a concept.

Chrysler declined to speculate on what, if anything, will replace the 300 sedan, which is one of only two vehicles from the brand along with the Pacifica minivan. The car could be replaced by the electric Chrysler Airflow, which was unveiled as a concept at CES earlier this year.

Chrysler has announced that its first battery-powered electric vehicle will be launched in 2025, followed by an all-electric model lineup in 2028.
