Herm Edwards may have escaped the NCAA's probe into possible recruiting infractions. But Saturday night's 30-21 setback to Eastern Michigan at Sun Devil Stadium did just that. According to a program spokeswoman, Edwards is no longer the coach of the football program due to a "mutual parting of the ways."

Ray Anderson, ASU's athletic director, has subsequently verified the news.

"We have decided to make an immediate change in the leadership of our football program." "Anderson stated in a Twitter release. "Coach Edwards and I have mutually agreed that he would leave his duties as our head coach.

Doing what is best for our present team, employees, and institution is at the heart of this. I understand your dissatisfaction. We must do better and that starts with our decision today.”

There is yet to be a choice made on a temporary coach. After a game, players normally take the day off on Sunday.

Edwards, 68, was in his sixth season as head coach of the Sun Devils. His teams were 26-20 during that span, including three bowl game berths, although they were 1-2 thus far in 2022.

When Todd Graham was sacked in 2018, Athletic Director Ray Anderson welcomed him on board. Anderson was Edwards' agent during his NFL days, thus the two had a lengthy history.

At the time, the hiring was heavily criticized because Edwards had not coached at the collegiate level since serving as defensive backs coach at San Jose State in 1986.
