A PLANE has crashed and erupted into flames at the Reno Air Races, according to terrifying livestream footage.

According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, deputies were responding to an air race-related incident. A local journalist posted a video of the precise moment the plane crashed.

The plane appeared to smash into the earth before bursting in a catastrophic accident that shocked the announcers.

"We've got a disaster here," stated one announcer during the livestream.

The status of the crew onboard is unknown.

The fire was soon extinguished by many authorities.

Officials from the air race have asked witnesses to avoid the collision scene.

Following the sad accident, a spokeswoman for the Reno Air Races issued a statement.

"At this point, we are gathering information and confirming facts of the event that occurred today during the Jet Gold Race," according to the statement.

"We can affirm that there was just one plane involved." The National Championship Air Races has halted all operations for the 2022 event, and we will offer an update as soon as we get one.

"The incident will be investigated by the NTSB and the FAA."
