Shooting at Illinois' Six Flags Great America leaves three people injured
Three people were reportedly shot outside Six Flags Great America's entrance on Sunday night, according to police in Gurnee, Illinois.
The Six Flags Great America amusement park in Gurnee, Illinois, and the police have verified that three individuals were hurt in a shooting that occurred in the parking lot on Sunday night.
According to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department, the Gurnee Police Department responded to numerous 911 callers reporting gunfire at the park at around 8 p.m. According to police, their early investigation revealed that a car had pulled into the parking lot, the suspects got out near the park's main entrance, and then started firing at another person. The suspects then drove away from the crime scene.
According to authorities, two patients, ages 17 and 19, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening leg injuries. A third person was hurt in the shoulder but chose not to visit the hospital.
"This evening's gunshot was not a random act; instead, it seemed to be a deliberate incident that took place outside of the park. The park was not the scene of an active shooter situation "police in Gurnee said.
According to the park's communication expert Rachel Kendziora, the Gurnee Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Office were both in charge of the situation Sunday night.
In response to the incident, the park had to close early, according to Kendziora. According to Gurnee authorities, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was helping to rid the theme park of visitors and employees.
About one hour's drive north of Chicago is the city of Gurnee.
When the shooting happened, Michael Pontrelli and his family were in the park. He told CNN that he had just exited the Superman ride when he saw people in bunches fleeing the gate.
My family and I hid between these two walls while waiting for clearance when we "then (saw a) swarm of parents moving their kids," he said. Police were escorting everyone out while charging in bearing arms.
Pontrelli's videotape of the scene reveals a substantial police presence outside the park.
According to a statement from Kendziora, the park is appreciative of the staff members who worked to look after visitors and the Gurnee police for their continued presence at the park to provide security.
According to the statement, "Six Flags devotes our greatest amount of time, expertise, and resources to safety and security." "For the protection of visitors and staff, layers of preventative measures are in place both inside and outside the park. In order to guarantee the highest degree of safety, we constantly examine and improve our protocol."
