Highlights of the UFC 278 results: Leon Edwards knocks out Kamaru Usman in the final seconds to win the world title

'Rocky' stunned the world by winning the welterweight title with a head-kick knockout in the last seconds of the contest.

Leon Edwards has just stunned the entire globe. Edwards' "Rocky" tale came to reality on Saturday night with a come-from-behind, head-kick knockout late in Round 5 of UFC 278's main event.

After becoming the first person to get a takedown on the practically faultless champion in Round 1, Edwards struggled to gain any form of momentum in the subsequent rounds. Usman grabbed control of the fight with his superior wrestling and launched big boxing combinations, and he appeared to be on his way to yet another championship defense as he approached Anderson Silva's all-time record.

Usman's speed slowed in Round 5, but the champ seemed poised to win by unanimous decision, as Edwards appeared despondent in his corner as his camp encouraged him to come alive in the last round.

At 4:04 of Round 5, Edwards landed a right jab and a left head kick that put Usman out cold.

"Pound-for-pound. Headshot. Dead, "During his post-fight interview, Edwards told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I've been saying all week that this is my moment. Everything that has already occurred. The epidemic has been going on for the previous two years. Ring rust does not exist. Look at me now, I told you."

With the victory over Usman, Edwards rose to 20-3 (1 NC). His unbeaten streak now stands at 11. Usman's 19-fight winning streak came to an end in the blink of an eye, as he suffered his first defeat in nine years.

It was the fourth most recent finish in a title bout, coming only seconds after Usman finished Colby Covington in 2019.

Usman remained upbeat about his prospects. The former champion turned to Twitter to declare his intention to return with a fury.

During a post-fight news conference, UFC president Dana White urged on a trilogy. White proposed Wembley as a location and indicated a wish to see the finals in England.

"I thought Usman fought the ideal fight," stated White. "Consider all that was at stake for Usman tonight. All night, Usman battled with complete confidence. It wasn't the most fan-friendly technique, but he was landing heavy blows to the body, head, and elbows. He couldn't have waged a better fight to the very end."

Edwards believes that UFC fans have yet to see his finest. Edwards said that even his poorest effort resulted in a knockout victory against Usman's best.

"That was one of my worst efforts out there," Edwards said during a press conference. "I didn't feel right in there tonight." I went out there and beat them pound for pound.

"My body just wasn't behaving the way it was supposed to." I'm not sure if it was the altitude or anything else. Even backstage, watching other fights on TV, everyone was fatigued and gassed out. Like Luke [Rockhold] and everyone else. I was wondering why everyone was becoming tired. I felt it after the first round. My body didn't seem to be responding. It wasn't a cardiac problem; rather, my body wasn't physically reacting.

"That was all he had to offer. Even though it was the worst I had to give, I still knocked him out."

Edwards has also indicated interest in facing Masvidal in the United Kingdom if "GameBred" regains his winning ways.

Furthermore, Paulo Costa and Rockhold fought for 15 minutes before Costa was pronounced the winner. Rockhold left everything in the cage, including wiping his blood over Costa's face in the dying minutes of the bout. And Merab Dvalishvili established himself atop the bantamweight contenders with a convincing win over Jose Aldo, but don't expect him to face his friend and teammate — current titleholder Aljamain Sterling — anytime soon, as the native of Georgia shut down any talk of a rematch immediately after the fight.
