Amazon is not expected to make a bid to acquire Electronic Arts, sources told CNBC's David Faber on Friday.

EA shares closed up 3.5% Friday after USA Today reported that Amazon would announce Friday that it plans to make a bid for the video game publisher known for hit titles such as FIFA, Madden and Apex Legends.

Faber dismissed the report on CNBC's Squawk Box. "There's nothing to it," he said, citing sources.

An Amazon spokesman said the company does not comment on rumors or speculation. A spokesman for EA declined to comment.

If Amazon seriously pursues EA, it could help bolster the retail giant's gaming presence. Amazon already owns Twitch, a streaming service popular with gamers, has launched its own cloud gaming service called Luna and offers perks for gamers as part of its Prime loyalty program.

Amazon has been very active on the M&A front. Earlier this month, Amazon announced that it was acquiring iRobot, best known for its Roomba robot vacuum cleaner, for $1.7 billion. This announcement came just two weeks after it announced it was buying boutique chain One Medical for $3.9 billion.

The gaming industry has seen some consolidation this year. In January, Microsoft announced it would buy Activision Blizzard in a $68.7 billion deal. And in May, Take-Two Interactive announced it would acquire Zynga for $11 billion.
