Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the London, Ont., area, with heavy rains moving southwest.

A line of strong thunderstorms potential of dumping heavy rain in London, Parkhill, and eastern Middlesex County is being tracked by the meteorological service.

The storms are expected to move southwest at 20 km/h, from New Hamburg through St. Marys to Mount Carmel.

According to the meteorological service, the storms might produce up to 50 mm of rain in one hour.

Lucan, Tavistock, Ailsa Craig, Elginfield, Granton, Bryanston, Wellburn, Thorndale, Kintore, Lakeside, Fairview, Brooksdale, Hickson, Lieury, West McGillivray, Brinsley, Mooresville, Clandeboye, Prospect Hill, and Devizes are all affected by the alert.

Officials warn that heavy rains can trigger flash floods and pooling water on highways, and that lightning can harm or even kill people.

If severe weather is forecast, the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management advises individuals to seek shelter immediately.
